Lesson 1: Intro-We don’t know what we don’t know. We have a tendency to either over assess our own abilities and downplay the hardness of future challenges or the opposite, when often reality is somewhere in the middle. Is Google a sufficient resource? If we get council and opinion from friends & relatives, can we count on a). their knowledge/experience being sufficient and b). them being honest with tough love to save us from future pitfalls and setbacks? How can denial and not living in reality/truth run us aground?
Lesson 2: 100’s of articles listing personality traits/characteristics of entrepreneurs. Risk takers/confident, good with math, extravert, creative, motivated, pushy/aggressive, etc… How accurate are they? Are they myths? Do some of those traits taken to the extreme or out of balance make it harder not easier?
Lesson 3: Hypothesis-If you’re afraid, don’t believe in yourself & never try can you ever succeed? If you decide you can and never quit, won’t you eventually learn, grow, etc and succeed? Are passion, commitment, perseverance & willingness to fail greater factors than the character traits often listed?
Lesson 4: Self-employed vs. business owner (control vs. delegate). Is it better to work alone or with others? If we don’t have all the skills, experience, software and other resources that we need to operate our business well, is it better to bring other people in that bring those things to the table or is it better to run sub-par or gimp along until we can learn/acquire those other pieces of the puzzle? Is it ok to start alone and then try to build a team later? What if we just like working alone?, how can we be a business owner alone?, would we do everything ourselves or who would we delegate to?
Lesson 5: DIY vs. DFY…will we need more $/capital or spend more time and make more mistakes getting to viability? If we don’t have the capital/$, time and skill level to operate like a business owner, can we learn to be a business owner while paying way as self-employed, then start a 2nd more viable and scalable business later when ready? Is that better than staying in a job until ready? Will we learn/grow more working from home, freelancer, etc?
